Dieses alte chinesische Märchen erzählt die Geschichte des jungen Mädchens Mulan, dessen alter, kranker Vater in die Armee eingezogen wird, um die einfallenden Mongolen zu bekämpfen. Da er in seinem Zustand die Strapazen des Krieges nicht überleben würde, verkleidet sie sich als Mann und gibt sich als ihr Vater aus. Ihre Vorfahren sind mit diesem Plan nicht einverstanden und schicken deshalb den kleinen Drachen Mushu hinterher, um sie von ihrem Vorhaben abzubringen. Doch als er Mulan begegnet, schlägt er sich auf ihre Seite…
